TROPHIC LABSPerformance Architect for Tonal

The Trophic Engine

The Trophic Engine.

An Intelligence Layer for your Tonal — three steps, repeating, every cycle, automatic. Powered by the most advanced AI models available, getting better exponentially, every quarter.

Step 01

Listen.

AI reads your full Tonal history through the API at depth no human could — every set, every rep, every weight. RPE where logged. Accessory used per movement. Time-under-tension. Rest intervals. Completion confidence on every prescribed lift. Nothing summarized, nothing inferred — the raw signal, intact.

Step 02

Model.

Advanced AI runs through your full Tonal history — every set, every rep, every nuance — and catches what eyes and spreadsheets miss: the side of your body that's lagging the other, the week your patterns shifted, the muscle that's been quietly under-stimulated all month. Then it applies Best Known Practices to your specific data: weekly volume per muscle group against MEV / MAV / MRV landmarks. Frequency optimization per Schoenfeld's meta-analyses. Female-physiology calibration per Stacy Sims's work. Progression curves and stall detection per lift. Accessory grouping to keep workouts operationally clean. Deload timing based on accumulated fatigue, not the calendar.

VOLUMEFATIGUEREADINESS
Step 03

Inject.

We push a complete five-week mesocycle directly into your Tonal. Phase-labeled. Session-counted. Ready to lift. You walk to the machine — the right workout is already there. We listen to what you actually did. The next cycle adjusts. No manual programming. No spreadsheets. And if you'd rather plug in your own preferred AI model, that option's on the table — the layer is yours.

The program rewrites itself

Most programs are fixed. Trophic's adapts week over week.

Every other program — including Tonal's built-ins — locks the plan at day one. Tonal's smart-flex adjusts weight per set; the program itself doesn't move.

Trophic does. The Engine pushes weeks 1 and 2 to your Tonal. As you finish week 1, the AI reads what your body actually did and rewrites weeks 3 and 4 against your real data — reps, sets, and format, all recalibrated within the periodization.

Week 4 is still peak. Week 5 is still deload. The science holds. What adapts is how peak and deload land for you. By the end of week 2, the rest of your mesocycle has been re-architected to your reality.

Tonal adapts the weight. Trophic adapts the program.

Inside the Logic Module

What the AI actually does.

AI lets us optimize Tonal's weight modes — eccentric, chains, smart flex, burnout, drop sets — and model the workouts that apply Best Known Practices to your unique data. Every cycle, calibrated to your body. Simplified, the real engine handles edge cases, deload timing, accessory grouping, and dozens of other concerns. The shape, though, is this:

for muscle in tracked_muscles:
  weekly_volume = sum(sets * load * reps for session in last_7d)
  if weekly_volume < MEV[muscle]:
    prescribe(volume_increase, target=MAV[muscle])
  elif weekly_volume > MRV[muscle]:
    prescribe(deload_week)
  else:
    prescribe(maintenance)

MEV / MAV / MRV per Israetel and Renaissance Periodization. Volume landmarks calculated against your specific training history, not generic population averages.

What we don't do

We don't invent science. We don't replace coaches. We don't claim AGI.

We apply Best Known Practices — peer-reviewed, replicated, refined over decades — to your specific data. The methodologies are not ours. The application of them to your Tonal, every cycle, automatically, through advanced AI, is.
